Pothia Harbour (Kalymnos)

36° 56.9′ N · 26° 59.6′ E

Kalymnos' capital and main port: an amphitheatre of sponge-merchant mansions and captains' houses rising from a busy ferry harbour on the south coast. It's the island's port of entry and its only full-service stop.

Practical

Town quay, not a marina; you anchor stern-to (bow anchor) on two blue-painted quay sections. SW quay: room for about 12–15 yachts, closest to town; drop the anchor in 7–8 m on mud and weed, which holds well once dug in. Meltemi gusts hit your port bow here, so test the set before leaving the boat. New NW quay (north of the fishing quay): room for almost 50 yachts, 3–3.5 m about 2 m off the wall; anchor in 6–7 m. Watch for concrete blocks beside the wall if your rudder draws more than 2 m. The meltemi blows onto your stern here, so it's the better berth in a full meltemi, but ferry wash is constant. Strong NW gusts cross the harbour, and southerly winds send a heavy swell in. Water (now potable) and electricity are on the quay; CruisersWiki lists a €5 electricity fee (undated; verify locally). Beware unofficial 'mooring assistance' helpers in yellow jackets who charge their own fee. Pay only the authorised port-fee collector, and ask your neighbours. Expect traffic and bar noise. Per a 2024-era skipper report, harbour staff sometimes take your lines and lay their own anchor. Coast Guard on VHF 12.
