Kalymnos Nautical & Folklore Museum / sponge workshops

36° 57.0′ N · 26° 59.1′ E

In the former Vouvaleios Technical School beside Pothia's Town Hall, the Maritime Museum tells the story of the sponge divers: skandalopetra stones, early diving suits, wreck finds and photographs of the fleets leaving for North Africa. Folklore displays share the building, and working sponge workshops in town show how the sponges are cleaned and trimmed.

Practical

Founded 1994. Exhibits cover breath-hold diving with the 8–14 kg skandalopetra stone, the brutal history of the bends, and the processing of sponges. Hours change seasonally (the municipality posted temporary hours in 2020), so verify locally. The waterfront sponge shops and small factories explain the process and sell natural sponges. Short walk from either yacht quay. Coordinate from the municipal site's map pin.
