Therma Hot Springs (Ikaria)

37° 37.4′ N · 26° 18.3′ E

Ikaria has been a hydrotherapy centre since antiquity, and the village of Therma, half a mile from Agios Kirykos, still has Roman bath ruins and three working radon-rich thermal spas - Cave, Apollon and Kratsas.

Practical

The springs are radioactive (radon/radium) saline waters; local doctors approve spa treatments after an examination, and people with heart disease, acute rheumatism or cerebral conditions are advised against them - consult your own physician. Free hot springs also flow into the sea along the coast (for example at Lefkada west of Agios Kirykos, and Agia Kyriaki near the airport), and the new Agios Kirykos marina has its own small thermal pool. Anchor in Therma bay or walk from the marina.
