Skyros Carnival (Apokries)

38° 54.4′ N · 24° 34.0′ E · approximate

One of Greece's wildest carnivals. On the weekends before Clean Monday, masked 'yeri' in goat-pelt capes and kid-skin masks, hung with heavy sheep bells, dance through Chora's lanes. With them go the korelles (men dressed as brides) and the frangi (masked figures parodying European dress).

Practical

Held on the four weekends before Clean Monday, usually February or March. Rooms are often booked by the previous November (Greektravel). This is out of season for sailing: Linaria's municipal berths and the daily ferry from Kymi are the practical options, and winter gales are possible. The position is the Chora village node.
