Pondamos Beach (Halki)

36° 13.2′ N · 27° 36.3′ E

Halki's favourite beach, a short walk west of the harbour. Its sandy bay doubles as the best anchorage on the island, solid even in a meltemi.

Practical

Sailing Issues: suitable in all but southerlies, with solid safety against the meltemi; gusts W–NW. Approach on a course of 000° into the bay: there are shallows either side of the entrance. Anchor in 4–6 m on sand; there is more rock deeper. To avoid the parasols on the northern beach, use the lovely beach in the NW corner in 3.5–4 m. Grecosailor: mostly sand with rocks below the surface near shore, so stay off the shoreline; southerlies can be a problem. Greeka: organised, usually sheltered and safe for children; a small chapel on the cliff above. Nick's Taverna does vegetarian and vegan take-away, and there is a mini-market towards the port (Sailing Issues).
