Plomari Ouzo Museum (Varvagiannis)

38° 58.3′ N · 26° 23.1′ E

The Varvagiannis family's ouzo museum beside its working distillery shows 160 years of ouzo-making, including the first copper alembic, made in Constantinople in 1858, with tastings to finish.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap (Mouseio Ouzou Varvagianni), east of Plomari town — a taxi or a long walk from the harbour. Tastings and audio-visual tours in Greek and English; visitor centre and shop. Tel +30 22520 32741 / +30 22520 33300. The rival Isidoros Arvanitis 'Ouzo World' museum (Plomari Ouzo) is on the outskirts at Kambos Plagias, with 18 hand-made copper stills, bottling-line tours and tasting (tel +30 22520 31450). Visit Lesvos says Lesvos' 17 ouzo makers produce at least half of Greece's ouzo. Hours vary — phone ahead.
