39° 22.1′ N · 26° 10.6′ E

The Genoese–Ottoman fortress on the hilltop above Molyvos — ten towers of reddish trachyte with sweeping views over the harbour, the north coast and across to Turkey.

Practical

Visit Lesvos: the second-largest castle on Lesvos, an irregular trapezoid about 70 m a side with ten towers, entered through three successive gates (Ottoman, Genoese, Byzantine) on the south-west; now a summer events venue. Tel +30 22530 71803. A steep 15-minute walk up cobbled lanes from the harbour; go early or at sunset. Also in the village: the Ottoman hammam, the Krallis mansion and the municipal gallery.
