Mavri Rachi & Palaiokastro (Psara)
38° 32.1′ N · 25° 33.8′ E
The Black Ridge, site of the old fort of Palaiokastro just south of town, where in 1824 the last defenders and refugees blew up the powder magazine rather than surrender to the Ottoman force — the event immortalised by Solomos.
Practical
Reached by a path about a 10-minute walk from town (CruisersWiki); visit takes about an hour (exploring-greece). The monument was erected in 1956 at about 90 m altitude. A marble 'Glory of Psara' statue and memorials to fireship captains Papanikolis and Kanaris stand by the harbour (OSM). The destruction took place on 20-21 June 1824 Old Style (2-3 July New Style) (Wikipedia). Great sunset viewpoint (allovergreece).
