Lesvos North-Coast Meltemi Exposure
39° 22.8′ N · 26° 15.0′ E · approximate
In July and August the meltemi blows N–NE down the Aegean; Lesvos' north and west coasts take the full force with short, steep seas, while the south coast and the Gulfs of Kalloni and Gera stay sheltered.
Practical
Coordinate is a representative offshore point off the north coast (derived, not a feature). One guide: meltemi typically N–NE 15–25 kn, frequently 20–30 kn or more, strongest along the north and west coasts; the gulfs are the key refuges. yachting.com says Lesvos sees a somewhat less severe meltemi than the central Aegean, but most bays east of Molyvos are exposed to it and Eftalou beach gets big waves. Expect acceleration and gusts off headlands and down valleys. Plan the north coast early in the day, use Molyvos/Petra or Sigri as refuges, and run for the Gulf of Kalloni when a multi-day blow is forecast. Outside summer, southerly and easterly systems bring swell into Plomari and the south-facing bays.
