Armathia Islet Beaches (Kasos)

35° 26.2′ N · 26° 51.8′ E

An uninhabited islet off Kasos's north-west corner, once home to more than 100 gypsum miners, now visited only by day boats. Its white-sand beaches and turquoise water are regularly called among the finest in the Aegean.

Practical

Wikipedia: uninhabited since the mid-20th century, with day-trippers from the nearby islands and an observatory used by wildlife watchers. aegeanislands.gr: Marmara is 'the best beach of the entire area', with Karavostasi and little Apopantoula also impressive; the whitewashed Ypapanti chapel still stands, and on 2 February Kasiots come over for its liturgy. kasos.gr lists boat trips from Fry and notes that Marmara is reached only by boat and is unorganised, so bring water, sunscreen and a hat. About 3 nm from Fry. We found no published anchoring data: approach in calm weather with a bow lookout, and leave before the afternoon meltemi builds. Position: centre of the islet (Wikipedia).
