Alimia Bay (Agios Georgios), Alimia
36° 16.1′ N · 27° 42.5′ E
The big bay of uninhabited Alimia between Rhodes and Halki ('Eulimnia', 'with good harbours'). Turquoise water, the ruined village round the church of St George, rock-cut Hellenistic shipsheds, and Italian barracks with WWII German graffiti.
Practical
Sailing Issues: three spots in Alimnias (St George) bay. Discarded moorings lie on the seabed, so use a trip line, and try to take a line ashore everywhere. (1) Off the beach west of the church of St George (pin). (2) Near Agios Minas church (36.26596, 27.70721); what looks like a pier there is a reef of submerged foundations, and the floating pontoon is gone; open SW–NW. (3) Tigani cove at the entrance (36.25585, 27.70129), with a wreck on the east side and all-round protection. mySea: mud with sand and weed, good holding. Garmin and Eagle Ray charts show the reefs best. Gusts NW; the meltemi is 'surprisingly gentle' around Alimia. Snorkelling is superb. Natural salt lake NW of the village (Wikipedia). No facilities at all.
Best for
Wild, deserted overnight between Rhodes and Halki
Season
May–October; meltemi gentle here
