Agios Zacharias & Despoti Nero (Tilos)

36° 24.1′ N · 27° 25.6′ E

Two adjoining beaches in a large triangular bay south of Livadia, with rock formations to snorkel and a stream leading up to the ghost village of ancient Gera.

Practical

Open from NW through NE; off the beaten track. Agios Zacharias has rocky formations good for snorkelling and a mini-peninsula; Despoti Nero's pebble beach is in the deepest corner. Follow the stream uphill to the ruins of Gera, an old agricultural outpost fed by the Despoti Nero spring (Sailing Issues). Rounding Cape Episkopi, Tilos's east tip, expect currents over 3 knots (see passage).

Best for

Snorkelling and a ghost-village walk

Season

Settled weather; open NW–NE
