Agia Markella Monastery & Anchorage (Chios)
38° 28.8′ N · 25° 53.2′ E
The seaside pilgrimage church of Chios's patron saint, built right on a beach looking out to Psara, about 8 km west of Volissos; a path leads to the rock of her martyrdom and a holy spring.
Practical
Anchorage off the pebble beach at 38°28'45.3"N 25°53'05.5"E on an all-sand bottom (Grecosailor); beach restaurant. Exposed to the west — a settled-weather stop. Former monks' cells serve as a pilgrims' hostel (religiousgreece). The feast on July 22 is the island's biggest festival — avoid anchoring here that day unless you want the crowds.
