Vathy Bay (Sifnos)

36° 55.8′ N · 24° 41.5′ E

A nearly enclosed, omega-shaped bay on the SW coast with the island's best sand beach. The 16th-century Taxiarchis chapel sits on a spit at the water's edge, and tavernas have their tables on the sand.

Practical

SailingIssues: all-round shelter, even in SW winds. Anchor west of the pier and expect NE gusts. Keep well off the Taxiarches church pier, which has barely enough depth on its west and south sides; the east side is mostly ballast stone. mySea: 3-10 m over sand and weed, good to very good holding. The jetty head takes a few boats stern-to in 1.5-2.5 m. OpenStreetMap maps two 24/7 water points on the jetty, and SailingIssues notes water and electricity at the taverna by the church. Tavernas at the north end include Okeanida, To Tsikali, Manolis and Bola. Bola rents sea canoes and kayaks (+30 22840 36002). Vathi Market is mapped behind the beach, and the Atsonios pottery works nearby. Bus to Apollonia (10 km). Sand lilies flower on the beach around mid-August (municipality). Small coves to the south are quieter.

Best for
