Syros Meltemi Gusts (West Coast & Finikas)
37° 25.2′ N · 24° 52.8′ E · approximate
In the summer meltemi, the west coast of Syros is in the lee, but the wind does not disappear: it accelerates over and down the island's hills. Expect hard gusts in the 'sheltered' bays from Finikas to Grammata.
Practical
Coordinate is approx: it marks the central west coast. George Yachts: the meltemi is strongest from mid-July to mid-August, typically Force 5-7, gusting higher in open water. Sailingissues: the west-coast anchorages have sound protection from northerlies, but severe NE gusts come over the hills. YACHT (Aug 2025): strong gusts through Finikas bay. A 2013 guide reports gusts through the mountains at Kini. Wind also accelerates in the channels between Syros, Mykonos and Tinos. Lay out plenty of chain, avoid anchoring on seagrass, and plan open-water legs for the early morning before the meltemi builds.
