Southerly Swell at Anafi

36° 20.6′ N · 25° 46.2′ E · approximate

Anafi's harbour and south-coast beaches are well placed for the meltemi but face the open sea to the south. A sirocco or a spring or autumn southerly gale turns them dangerous.

Practical

Coordinates are the harbour (approx: a representative point). aegeanislands.gr: SE winds 'require serious attention' because of the surge they raise. Grecosailor also says the south coast is exposed. In a sirocco go to Symiakos bay, or north-coast Livoskopos in a garbis (SW) (aegeanislands.gr), or better, run for Vlychada on Santorini (16 nm W) before it arrives. Depths drop quickly near shore and holding is mainly sand with weed (Grecosailor). Southerlies are most frequent outside the June-September meltemi season.
