Parikia Kastro & Old Town

37° 5.1′ N · 25° 8.9′ E

Parikia's medieval castle stands above the seafront, its wall built almost entirely from the marble of an ancient temple. Column drums and blocks are still visible in the masonry, and the lanes of the old town wind around it.

Practical

The Wikipedia Paros article calls it the Frankish Castle and says the marble came from a temple of Apollo. The Parikia article calls it Venetian and dates it to the early 17th century, so the sources disagree on the date. Also in town: the Archaeological Museum, which holds a fragment of the Parian Chronicle, the harbour windmill, and the last home of independence heroine Manto Mavrogenous (Wikipedia; OpenStreetMap). An easy evening walk from the quay. Position from the OpenStreetMap castle outline.
