Panagia Evangelistria Church (Tinos)
37° 32.5′ N · 25° 9.8′ E
The great marble church of Our Lady of Tinos at the top of the main street, home of a miracle-working icon found in 1822 and the most important Orthodox pilgrimage site in Greece.
Practical
The icon was found after a vision of the nun Pelagia during the War of Independence; pilgrims come especially for the Annunciation (25 March) and the Dormition (15 August) (SailingIssues; Wikipedia). Many pilgrims cover the roughly 800 m from the ferry wharf to the church on their knees (Wikipedia). A 10-15 minute walk uphill from the yacht basin. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Hours not published online; verify locally. Pin from OpenStreetMap.
