Dormition of the Virgin Pilgrimage, 15 August (Tinos)
37° 32.5′ N · 25° 9.8′ E
On 15 August, the Dormition of the Virgin, thousands of pilgrims pour into Tinos for the island's greatest feast, with a procession of the icon after the morning mass; the day also commemorates the sinking of the Greek cruiser Elli in Tinos harbour on 15 August 1940.
Practical
Expect the harbour, quays and town to be overwhelmed for several days either side. Berthing for yachts is very difficult. Plan to be elsewhere, or arrive days early and stay put. The Annunciation on 25 March is the second great pilgrimage (Noonsite; SailingIssues). The Elli was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Delfino while at anchor for the feast; 9 men were killed (Wikipedia). Many Tinos museums close on 15 August (PIOP). Pin is the church.
