Merichas Harbour (Kythnos)

37° 23.4′ N · 24° 23.8′ E

Kythnos's ferry port and main town quay, in a deep bay on the west coast. A breakwater shelters a stern-to quay lined with tavernas, bakeries and supermarkets, and it is the island's provisioning and fuel stop.

Practical

About 15 berths, bow or stern to with your own anchor, in 2-6 m at the quay and 3-10 m in the bay. The bottom is sand, mud and seagrass with moderate holding (mySea, kythnos.gr). Arrows behind the seawall mark yacht positions. Avoid the first spaces, which are used by ferries and hydrofoils (kythnos.net). Since 2013 ferries berth outside the breakwater, but their wash can still be dangerous close to the quay: set the anchor well and leave long lines with an extra metre off the concrete (sailingissues, mySea). It is shallow (under 1.5 m) at the southern end of the quay by the fish market. Fairly well protected from the prevailing wind, but NW winds push swell in and the meltemi sends strong katabatic gusts down the valley, so use plenty of scope. Often full with charter yachts on Thursdays and Fridays. Alternatives are to anchor in the bay or go stern-to at the head of the fishing quay. Port Fund of Syros tel. +30 22810 82336 (office hours 8am-1pm and 5pm-10pm), local contact +30 694 406 1268. Utilities and fees follow the Port Fund schedule: first day EUR 7 incl. 200 L water and 2 kW power, and per-metre yearly berthing rates divided by 365 plus VAT, so verify locally. A mySea review reported about EUR 14 a night plus utilities in 2017. Showers EUR 2.20 (Port Fund) or EUR 3 (MarinaTips). The harbour coordinate is the OpenSeaMap harbour feature.
