Meltemi Gusts & Southerly Swell at Stavros (Donoussa)

37° 5.9′ N · 25° 47.7′ E · approximate

In the summer meltemi, gusts tumble into Stavros bay from shifting directions, and any southerly sends sea and swell straight into the harbour.

Practical

Sailboatliveaboard: the meltemi (N-NE, commonly 20-30 kn with higher gusts, most persistent in July and August) is partly deflected by the terrain but still enters Stavros bay with variable direction, shifting NE-NW, with gusts descending off the slopes that affect heading control on the final approach; southerlies have a direct fetch into the harbour and build a direct sea and swell, reducing shelter. Sailingissues: the port is open to any southerly or westerly. Plan: in a southerly forecast leave Stavros for Kalotaritissa (Roussa) in the north-east; in a strong meltemi, Kedros bay (5-12 m, sand, good holding) gives better protection than the harbour but is exposed to southerlies. Position is approx: in Stavros bay off the ferry pier.
