Meltemi at Santorini

36° 20.2′ N · 25° 26.1′ E · approximate

In July and August the northerly meltemi funnels around Santorini, kicks up a steep sea in the caldera entrances and hurls katabatic gusts off the high ground.

Practical

Coordinates are Vlychada Marina, the recommended refuge (approx: a representative point, not a phenomenon location). Sailingissues calls Vlychada 'the only port where it is safe to moor the yacht during a (Meltemi) storm'. On the east coast, Kamari is sheltered from the meltemi but a crew reported gusts above 40 knots off the mountain nightly before midnight. On the south coast, Akrotiri, Kambia and Black Beach give meltemi shelter in calm seas. In the caldera, Thirasia's Agios Nikolaos/Korfos area is described as quite sheltered from the meltemi. The north entrance between Oia and Thirasia, and Monolithos, Vourvoulos and Ammoudi, are poor in a northerly. Plan Santorini as the southern turning point, then go north to Ios early in the morning before the wind fills in.
