Lion of Kea Walk (Ioulida)

37° 38.5′ N · 24° 20.9′ E

A huge archaic lion, about 8 m long, carved straight into a schist outcrop just north-east of Ioulida around 600 BC. Legend says it commemorates the lion that drove the nymphs from Kea.

Practical

Walk out from the top of Ioulida on the paved path towards Agios Spyridon, about 10-15 minutes. It is the first section of Kea Trail 1 'Leon', which goes on 5.1 km downhill to Otzias beach, so a crew can walk down and be picked up by dinghy at Otzias. Carry water. The path is paved stone slabs, steep in places, and has little shade in summer. A drinking fountain (Benjamin spring) is mapped near the route. Free. Position from OpenStreetMap.
