Ioulida Chora (Kea)
37° 38.4′ N · 24° 20.5′ E
Kea's hilltop capital, a tiered amphitheatre of tiled and flat roofs built on the ancient acropolis of Ioulis and topped by the remains of a Venetian kastro from 1210. It has two Ernst Ziller civic buildings and the island's Archaeological Museum.
Practical
It is about 5-6 km by road from Korissia by taxi or bus, or a 3.1 km walk up Kea Trail 2 (Elixos) through a valley of old watermills. The Archaeological Museum holds the Agia Irini figurines and finds from Karthaia. Tavernas on the main lane include O Paparounas and Kalofagadon (OSM), and there is a pharmacy, a National Bank and a Piraeus Bank ATM. Streets are pedestrian-only, so wear sensible shoes. The 15 August and 10 February (Agios Charalambos) feasts are held here.
Best for
Evening walk, museum and dinner with a view
