Kastri Prehistoric Settlement Hike (Syros)

37° 29.4′ N · 24° 56.1′ E

A fortified Early Bronze Age hilltop village (about 2800-2300 BC) with rounded bastions, one of the earliest walled settlements in Greece. It sits above the north-east coast, next to Chalandriani, the largest Early Cycladic cemetery known (over 600 tombs).

Practical

Site position from OSM. Up to about 300 people lived at Kastri; Christos Tsountas excavated it in 1898. The Chalandriani cemetery (about 2700-2200 BC) yielded 'frying pans' decorated with longboat motifs. It has been a protected archaeological zone since 1992. Walk up from Glysoura cove or drive to Chalandriani village and walk out. No facilities; take water and a hat, and go early or late in summer. Sailingissues lists the site.
