Karavostasis Harbour (Folegandros)

Folegandros's only harbour: a ferry mole and a short yacht quay in a small bay on the east coast, with pebble beaches and tavernas. The bus waits here for the climb to the clifftop Chora.

Position from Grecosailor (36°36'52.3"N 24°56'57.6"E). Draught to about 4 m; one crew recorded 4.5 m near the quay. Berthing (Sailing Issues): drop anchor near the green beacon of the ferry quay and reverse onto the yacht quay. There is room for about 6 visiting yachts. Holding is good, mostly sand with some rocks. Other guides say the anchor 'does not always hold' (George Yachts) and to pick sand patches among the weed (Sailing Issues Liveaboard). Sailing Issues calls snorkelling to check the anchor 'ill-advised' here and suggests checking from the dinghy with an outboard. The long side of the ferry quay is for ferries and hydrofoils, which arrive at about 20 kn. There are reefs on the approach. Shelter: fierce WNW-NE gusts come down off the island, and heavy swell can work into the bay. Above 35 kn of northerly the harbour master has to clear yachts because the quay becomes untenable (Sailing Issues). Southerlies expose the harbour directly. Facilities: no marina, no pontoon and no fuel dock. Water is sometimes available by hose at the quay, arranged locally, with low pressure (Sailing Issues Liveaboard). The bus to Chora leaves from the mole and meets every ferry. Chora is 3.5 km uphill. Not a port of entry (Sailing Issues Liveaboard). No published fees (verify locally).
