Kalantos Bay & Harbour (Naxos)

36° 56.2′ N · 25° 28.3′ E

A remote bay at the southern tip of Naxos with a small breakwater harbour. It is the best meltemi shelter on the south coast and the natural jumping-off point for Koufonisia and the Small Cyclades.

Practical

Anchorage (this position, mySea): 3-6 m on sand, with mud and weed patches, holding moderate to very good. Noonsite (May 2018): very good shelter in all winds and good holding in sand, but expect gusts into the bay. Sailingissues: the best south-coast shelter in a meltemi, but sudden gusts, mainly from the north, come down the mountains. Use a trip line, because there are rocks near the beach. Open to southerlies. Harbour (36.93481, 25.47408): a fishermen's refuge with room for about 2 yachts up to 15 m, alongside or stern-to in 1-5 m (mySea). Ask the fishermen before taking a berth. The end of the pier is preferred because the stream silts the inner basin. Water and electricity on the pier, nothing else. A small bar opens in high season, and fishermen sell fresh fish. Local contact: Mr Vassilis of Ammoudia taverna, +30 6938690826, who can arrange transport (sailingissues). Rina sea cave is about 1 nm to the east.
