Gala Beach & Devil's Eye (Koufonisi)

36° 56.5′ N · 25° 37.4′ E

A trio of natural wonders around Pori: Gala, a sinkhole with a beach inside and milky water; the Devil's Eye, a low sea cave whose floor breathes with the swell; and the Piscina, a rock-ringed natural pool.

Practical

Devil's Eye: at the right-hand (south-east) edge of Pori bay as you face the sea. Climb through a gap in the rocks; after about 20 steps turn right to the low entrance and go in stooping. A hole connects to the sea and surges in and out. Gala (also called Trypiti): on the left edge of the Pori cove, along the path east from the beach. You can swim in the hole and, when the sea is calm, out to the open water and back. The Pori-Gala path is 550 m. Piscina: on the rocky coast between Platia Pounta and Pori, about 250 m before Pori (OSM 36.9397N 25.6246E). (All from koufonisia.gr.) Go only in calm sea: surge in the cave and the hole is dangerous in swell. Land by dinghy at Pori beach or walk the coastal path from the Chora.
