Dryopida Village & Katafyki Cave (Kythnos)

37° 22.9′ N · 24° 25.8′ E

Dryopida is Kythnos's second village, its red-tiled roofs filling a ravine in the island's centre. On its southern edge, the Katafyki Cave is one of the largest in Greece: a natural cave with rock curtains and speleothems joined to iron-mine galleries worked until 1939.

Practical

The cave is at about 190 m altitude in the Fyres area, an easy walk through Dryopida's lanes. Guided visits are a tourist attraction; hours and fees were not verified. Reach Dryopida by bus or taxi from Merichas (Dryopida-Kanala bus). It is also on Kythnos Route 2, which continues down to Lefkes beach past the 1852 wash-houses. The coordinate is the cave entrance on OpenStreetMap; Dryopida village is at 37.383 N 24.431 E (Wikipedia).
