Private mooring buoys laid in deep water off Korfos on Thirasia's caldera shore, run by the owner of the Captain John taverna. They are the practical way to spend a night inside the Santorini caldera, facing Oia's lights across the water.

Position approx: placed in the water off the Captain John taverna at Korfos (OSM restaurant 36.4389 N 25.3516 E), next to a line of special-purpose buoys mapped in OpenSeaMap at about 36.444-36.447 N 25.356-25.357 E. Confirm the exact buoy by phone. Sailingissues (page updated through March 2026): Captain John's mooring buoy lies in about 60 m below Manolas, EUR 25 per stay with no limit on duration, tel. +30 697 465 0720 or +30 22860 29042, with smaller buoys in front of the restaurant. Noonsite (April 2025) quotes 'approx. EUR 50 a night' for a Thirasia buoy, so verify locally. Call ahead in July-August. Sailingissues and Grecosailor say the area is quite sheltered from the meltemi, though gusts can drop off the cliffs. Large iron buoys can be hard on small yachts, so use chafe gear and a long bridle. The caldera is far too deep to anchor (50 m+ within boat lengths). Dinghy to the Korfos quay, eat at the tavernas and climb to Manolas. The local ferry to Oia (Ammoudi) or Fira runs about once a day (EUR 1 per sailingissues; verify locally); a water taxi is about EUR 60. Korfos access by land and sea is allowed under the 2026 seismic decision.
