37° 50.4′ N · 24° 53.3′ E · approximate

Central and southern Andros, its offshore islets and coastal waters form a 219 km2 EU Special Protection Area for birds, home to about 180 pairs of Eleonora's falcons plus short-toed eagles and peregrines.

Practical

Site GR4220028 'Andros: central and southern part, surrounding islets and coastal marine zone' (SPA, 21,938 ha). Its Standard Data Form lists Eleonora's falcon (180 breeding pairs), peregrine falcon (2-4 resident), short-toed eagle (passage), common buzzard (1 breeding pair), red-footed falcon (passage), Mediterranean shag (40-60 pairs), Alpine swift, Ruppell's warbler and Cretzschmar's bunting. Eleonora's falcons breed late in summer on sea cliffs and islets, so August-October is the best time to watch them hunting over the coast; keep well off nesting cliffs and islets and do not land on them. Pin is approx: the site centroid computed from the EEA polygon.
