Ancient Thera (Mesa Vouno)

36° 21.9′ N · 25° 28.7′ E

The ruins of the Dorian city of Thera along the spine of Mesa Vouno (396 m), high above Kamari and Perissa: a theatre, agora, Roman baths and a terrace where young men danced for Apollo.

Practical

Two ways up: a winding road from Kamari (taxi or car), or the footpath from Perissa, about an hour, past the chapel of Panagia Katefiani; one reviewer warns the slope before the chapel is poorly protected (Greeka). From a yacht, anchor at Perissa or Kamari and land by dinghy. No shade, so start early with water. Opening hours and tickets are not verified here; check with the Ministry of Culture before climbing. Finds are in the Fira museums.

Best for
