Amorgos Katabatic Gusts
36° 51.2′ N · 25° 54.8′ E
In the meltemi, Amorgos's 800 m mountain spine bends and accelerates the wind into violent gusts that pour down valleys and over low necks of land, often much stronger than the forecast.
Practical
Sailboatliveaboard: local effects are pronounced along the long, mountainous island. Wind accelerates around headlands and through the channels between Amorgos and nearby islands, and valleys and inlets create gusts and sudden shifts; the east coast takes the strongest conditions. Meltemi typically N-NW 20-30 kn, often over 30 kn, building through the afternoon. Specific spots: Kalotyri (sudden, severe gusts over the low part of Nikouria), Megali Vlichada (gusts down the valley; leave over 35 kn), Aegiali (strong NW gusts in port) (sailingissues). George Yachts: Kalotiri has strong gusts, and the east coast is untenable in the meltemi. Grecosailor: strong N-NE winds funnel across the island. Set anchors hard with full scope, use long double stern lines on quays, and reef early when sailing in the lee of the island. Position is the island's OSM centre.
