Amorgos Old Strata Trails

36° 49.9′ N · 25° 53.9′ E

The Palia Strata, the old mule road along the island's spine from Chora past Hozoviotissa to Langada, is one of the great Cycladic walks, with sea views on both sides.

Practical

Waymarked path 1: 14.5 km, about 4-5 hours, hard. Chora-Hozoviotissa-Kapsala-Asfondilitis-Potamos-Langada (Asfondilitis is about 2 hours 20 minutes from Chora). On the way: the Theoskepasti chapel at Kapsala, the Byzantine monastery of St John Chrysostom, Asfondilitis's old farming settlement with wells and rock carvings, and Agia Mamas at Oxo Meria. It is remote, with no settlements for long stretches, so carry plenty of water and food, wear ankle-supporting shoes, and tell someone your route (amorgos.gr). KML downloadable. Sailors can walk it one way and have the boat moved from Katapola to Aegiali. Position is the Chora trailhead.

Best for

A full-day walk the length of the island

Season

Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov best; start at dawn in summer
