Amorgos Fishing Protected Areas & Fishing Rules

36° 49.8′ N · 25° 51.9′ E · approximate

Since August 2025 Amorgos has had four fishing-protected areas, born of the community-led 'Amorgorama' initiative: three permanent no-take zones plus an island-wide seasonal fishing closure. Anyone trolling a line or spearfishing from a yacht needs to know them.

Practical

Position is approx and placed at Katapola Port Police (see Katapola Port Police (Amorgos)), where you should ask for the current zone boundaries and closure dates. Blue Marine Foundation / Burgess (2025 report): a Presidential Decree in August 2025 created four fishing-protected areas around Amorgos, with three permanent no-take zones and an island-wide seasonal closure. The published sources do not give the zone coordinates or closure months, so confirm locally before you fish. National rules (amorgos.gr): no licence is needed to fish recreationally from the shore or a boat; spearfishing is banned everywhere in Greece in May; spearguns powered by compressed gas or air, underwater lights for spearfishing, nets and explosives are all illegal; minimum sizes apply to many fish and to octopus. The South Aegean Marine Park decree, signed July 2026 and awaiting Council of State review, adds a ban on bottom-towed gear and limits on recreational fishing across the southern Cyclades (tovima.com). Separately, landing on Keros is forbidden (see Keros Archaeological Site (no landing)).
