Katapola Harbour (Amorgos)

36° 49.7′ N · 25° 51.8′ E

Amorgos's main port at the head of a deep west-coast bay, with three waterfront hamlets, a quay lined with tavernas, and the bus up to the clifftop Chora and the Hozoviotissa monastery.

Practical

Best all-round shelter on the island (Grecosailor; sailboatliveaboard). Go stern-to the SW or S quay on your own anchor, but not too close to the eastern ferry quay, which is shallow (sailingissues). Depth 3-5 m over sand with some rock and weed, good holding (George Yachts); 3-6 m alongside (sailboatliveaboard). Grecosailor gives about 2.2 m draught, VHF 74 and port phone +30 22850 71259. Do not use too much scope: chains cross, and a ferry may lift your anchor. Yachts and catamarans drawing under about 2 m can anchor east of the ferries. The approach is open and deep (10-20 m). Inside, anchor in 4-10 m over sand and mud. In a strong meltemi gusts sweep the bay, so dig the anchor in well. The harbour is crowded in July-September and space fills early. Water and power are limited, from distribution points on parts of the quay. Fuel comes by road tanker by arrangement; there is no fuel dock. No haul-out or yard on Amorgos. Most amenities are right at the quay; see Katapola Provisions & Fuel and Katapola Port Police. Dredging and a future marina are planned (sailingissues).

Best for
