Alimia Bay (Iraklia)
36° 49.7′ N · 25° 25.4′ E
A quiet, often overlooked cove at Iraklia's south-west tip with a pretty beach, a sunken WWII aircraft in the bay, and a rough footpath up to the Agios Ioannis cave.
Practical
Solid holding in sand; tested meltemi-proof (sailingissues). George Yachts and sailboatliveaboard give 5-12 m over sand and weed, generally good holding, open to southerly swell, so move if a southerly sets in. The Grecosailor report notes a sandy bottom near the beach with excellent holding and two caves. The WWII aircraft wreck lies on the seabed (snorkel it; see Alimia WWII Aircraft Wreck). Nothing ashore. A 30-minute walk over rugged phrygana scrub leads to the Agios Ioannis cave. Bring a torch and closed shoes.
Best for
Meltemi-proof overnight with a wreck to snorkel and a cave to hike to
Season
Jun-Sep meltemi refuge; open to S swell
