Agios Ioannis Cave Hike (Iraklia)
36° 49.7′ N · 25° 26.2′ E
A hike across Iraklia's scrubby uplands to the dripstone cave of Agios Ioannis. George Yachts calls it the largest cave in the Cyclades; local legend says it runs all the way to Ios.
Practical
From Agios Georgios port the path takes about 90 minutes (sailingissues); from Alimia bay it is about 30 minutes over rugged terrain. The entrance is low and the inside is dark and slippery, so bring a torch, closed shoes and plenty of water; there is no shade on the way. OpenStreetMap shows numbered island trails 1-8 around Panagia and the south. The feast of the Beheading of St John the Baptist is celebrated in the cave: sailingissues gives 29 August, and George Yachts gives the liturgy as 28 August (the eve).
Best for
Half-day adventure hike from the port or Alimia
Season
Go early in the morning in Jun-Sep; feast 28-29 Aug
