Agios Ioannis Bay (Mykonos)

37° 25.2′ N · 25° 18.6′ E · approximate

A sandy bay on Mykonos's southwest corner, looking straight across the channel at Delos and Rineia, with a white chapel above. It's the closest Mykonos anchorage to Delos and the beach from the film 'Shirley Valentine'.

Practical

Open roughly from south through west, sheltered from the N-NE meltemi by the island's bulk (inferred from the bay's orientation, so check the forecast). Sand bottom off the beach, which is good for snorkelling (Greeka, Wikivoyage). Ashore are two tavernas, a restaurant and a tiny store, with a bus to Chora. No watersports centre. Kapari, a smaller unorganised beach, lies just north behind the chapel. Position is approximate, set about 200 m WSW of the beach point Greeka maps (37.42138, 25.31146) to put it in the bay. Sound in and choose your own spot.

Best for

Short hop to Delos at opening time; sunset over Rineia

Season

May-Oct in N-NE winds; leave in S-W weather
