Point Venus Beach (Matavai Bay)
17° 29.7′ S · 149° 29.7′ W
The curving black-sand beach of Point Venus, where Wallis, Cook and the Bounty's crew came ashore, now a weekend favourite under the 1868 lighthouse.
Practical
Coordinates: the beach as mapped on OpenStreetMap. Land the dinghy from the Matavai Bay anchorage (24-hour limit); there is a small dinghy opening inside the black-and-yellow markers (Sugar Shack 2019). Ashore: artisan market, snacks, historical markers and the lighthouse; Super U and Champion are at the main-road junction, with Mobil and Shell stations (fuel and gas bottles). The Service du Tourisme closes the Point Venus site exceptionally at times (notice of 9 January 2026), so check before planning an event.
Best for
History, black sand and a dinghy-landing beach
