Faille d'Arue & Roses de Matavai (Arue Pass)
17° 31.0′ S · 149° 31.5′ W
Reef fault and fields of plate ('rose') coral either side of the Arue pass in front of the Yacht Club de Tahiti, extending along the drowned 'Toatea chain' reef across Matavai Bay.
Practical
Coordinates are Eleuthera's 'Faille d'Arue' site; 'Roses de Matavai' is close by (-17.51585, -149.52290) and 'Canyons du Taharaa' further east (-17.51157, -149.50642). For deep divers, Diving in Tahiti (1990s) describes the Arue Slope: a series of cliffs parallel to the submerged Toatea chain, explored at 45–50 m toward Point Venus with a strong torch, best in calm seas and the July–August maraamu; the water clouds after rain or when current scours the Yacht Club pass. The École de Plongée de Tahiti is based at the Yacht Club, a few minutes away.
