Ofai Tairi Manu (Bird-Drum Stone)

16° 27.2′ S · 152° 15.0′ W · approximate

Two stones at Hotuparaoa in Vaiea, one either side of the ring road. Fishermen once struck the smaller flat one with a coconut-frond stem so it boomed like a gun, scattering seabirds from the big holed rock to show where the tuna were.

Practical

Tahiti Heritage: at Hotuparaoa in Vaiea. The flat stone is 50 x 50 x 55 cm and faces a rock about 3.5 m high, shaped like a broken hoop and riddled with seabird holes. Coordinate is approximate: on the ring road at the south end of Vaiea below Hotu Paraoa hill (OSM peak at -16.45469, -152.25249); Tahiti Heritage gives no map point. Ask locally.
