Motu Auira

16° 26.7′ S · 152° 17.1′ W

The big western motu facing Tereia, with a coral-sand beach on its lagoon shore and an empty ocean side. You get there by wading thigh-to-waist deep across the lagoon from Tereia Point.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM coral-sand beach on Auira's lagoon shore, surveyed in 2019. Tahiti Tourisme: you can walk across the lagoon at low tide. Tahiti Heritage records the legend that departing souls made their first leap from Tereia to Motu Auira's ocean side. Wade only in calm weather and at low tide, wear reef shoes, and watch for stingrays (shuffle your feet). There is a basic camp site, 'camping Auira', on the motu (OSM). Yachts cannot reach it; the west lagoon is too shallow.
