Arahoho Blowhole (Tiarei)

17° 31.5′ S · 149° 23.4′ W

At PK 22 on the north-east coast, waves surging into an old lava tube shoot a roaring geyser of spray beside the road: Teruaporea, the trou du souffleur of Tiarei.

Practical

Coordinates from Tahiti Heritage. The blowhole is the end of a submarine cave and old lava tube at the foot of the cliff by the former coast road. It is partly filled since US Marines blasted the road through in 1946. Stay well back from the vent and the rocks when a swell is running. Combine with the Faarumai waterfalls about 1 km west. Road trip from Papeete (no yacht anchorage on this coast).
