Tevaitau Fort Hike (Rapa Iti)

27° 37.3′ S · 144° 20.7′ W

A short, steep climb from Ha'urei to the ridge-top fort of Tevaitau (Tevaitahu), one of two well-kept trails to Rapa's pa, with stone walls and a bird's-eye view down over the caldera bay and the moorings.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM archaeological site (fortification, hill fort) on a 261 m peak. Route (Pitufa 2018): the mountain road starts near the football field in Ha'urei (OSM pitch about 400 m west of the village node); where the road ends the path forks, left to Tevaitahu and right to Morongo Uta, so both forts can be done in one outing. Well maintained, but steep and slippery after rain; wear shoes and long sleeves in the cold winds. Only terraces and walls remain. Treat the sites as sacred: do not move stones.

Best for
