Takaroa Pass Anchorage

14° 27.7′ S · 145° 1.8′ W

A sand patch inside the lagoon about 1 nm from the pass, handy for an early departure, near the airport side of the atoll.

Practical

Position 14°27.671'S 145°01.831'W, sand with coral around; anchor held well (Cerebral Seabbatical, June 2022). Watch for coral heads, old fishing lines and abandoned pearl-farm gear when setting the hook; float your chain. Dr. No (2018) anchored as close inshore as possible near the airport at 14°27.519'S 145°01.440'W to avoid NE chop; a yacht sank nearby in 2017 (mast visible) after dragging when the wind went east. Pearl farming has largely stopped, but derelict gear remains under water.

Best for

Overnight near the pass
