Raroia Pearl Farm

16° 4.8′ S · 142° 22.3′ W · approximate

A pearl farm about 1 km south of the Kon-Tiki motu with a dinghy dock, where cruisers have watched grafters seed oysters. Visitors are welcome, but pearls are not sold on site.

Practical

Approximate position, as given by Jacaranda (Aug 2016, Soggy Paws): 16°04.826S / 142°22.282W, 'not sure of exact motu coordinates.' Then run by Gigi from New Caledonia; 12 grafters were seeding oysters, and pearls are sold through a Papeete shop. Spunky (2017): bring them some fruit from the Marquesas, they appreciate it. Errantries (2015) also describes a small farm on the north side of the village motu. Raroia's pearl farms hold 300 ha (5 farmers in 2024, commune sheet). Ownership and visits change: ask first by VHF or in the village.
