Raroia Lagoon Sharks, Rays and Octopus
16° 4.0′ S · 142° 21.7′ W · approximate
Raroia's eastern lagoon is busy with reef sharks, rays and octopus in the shallows behind the motus.
Practical
Approximate: placed just south of the Kon-Tiki anchorage, where Villa Veritas anchored in June 2022 and found lots of octopus; they cut a night dive short because visibility was poor and 'the sharks were disconcertingly interested'. Jacaranda (Aug 2016) found tropical reef fish, sharks, rays and octopus in the shallow water inside the motus of the northeast lagoon. Snorkel by day, avoid night dives here, and never carry speared fish in the water.
Best for
Shallow-water snorkeling with lots of life
