Raraka Biosphere Reserve Rules (Fare Biosphère)

16° 5.5′ S · 144° 57.3′ W

Raraka is one of the seven atolls of the UNESCO Fakarava Biosphere Reserve. The 'Fare biosphère' hut in Motupapu is where you learn the local rules.

Practical

Coordinate is the 'Fare biosphère' building in OpenStreetMap, next to the mairie and post office. Wikipedia (FR): Raraka has been in the biosphere reserve since 1977 (renewed 2006 and 2017). Sea-cucumber harvesting is allowed only in the transition zone, and pearl farming is limited to 5 ha in the north of the lagoon (max 200 spat lines). Under Arrêté n° 954 CM (18 July 2016), two maritime areas of Raraka are classified as IUCN category IV and VI protected areas (see the Soggy Paws marine-protected-areas file). Fish caught in the reserve atolls is for local consumption only. Anchor on sand, float your chain, and don't take shells or coral. Ask at the mairie about any zones closed to anchoring or fishing.
