Nihiru Atoll (no pass)
16° 44.0′ S · 142° 50.0′ W
A small triangular atoll about 49 km east of Makemo, now almost or entirely uninhabited, with a closed lagoon.
Practical
Coordinates are the atoll center (English Wikipedia, 16°44'S / 142°50'W). French Wikipedia: the 79 km² lagoon has no pass to the ocean ('dépourvu de passe'), and the atoll has had no permanent residents since about 2017 (11 people in 2012, mostly from Taenga). There is no anchorage and no services: not yacht-accessible. Part of Makemo commune. Low and unlit: give it a wide berth when sailing between Makemo and Raroia or toward Hao, especially at night.
